This project involved an upgrade of the companies Selco timber beam saw machine. The existing DOS based servo control system was removed and an Allen Bradley Control Logix PLC and Allen Bradley panel view plus installed. A two axis analogue servo card and high speed counter card were installed in the control logix rack to provide the integration into the existing servo amplifiers. A five port Ethernet hub was installed on the machine to provide the facility for remote diagnostics and reporting.

The machine itself involves a stack of twenty timber sheets loaded into the rear of the machine. The lift table at the rear automatically raises to the height preset by the operator and the timber sheet is automatically cut to the desired lengths. An accuracy of +/- 0.3 mm was required for the overall system.

Upgrading was necessary to ensure the accuracy and efficiency of the machine, allowing for remote diagnostics and reporting important data on the running of the machine.
